The Ninth house by Leigh Bardugo

The bookworm's tale : 4,5/5

A dark fantasy story, mixing magic, mystery, murder, in the heart of the famous university of Yale, that's what Leigh Bardugo offers us with this book.

Trigger warning : this book contains triggers warnings such as, drugs, murder, death, drug abuse/overdose, sexual assault, and more, if you don't feel comfortable reading about any of these topics, I don't recommend reading it. but let's remember that this is a fantasy, fiction book.

Let me introduce Alex "Galaxy" Stern, she's a teenager with a difficult past, raised in Los Angeles by a hippie mother, she dropped out of school to enter a violent, dark world, of drugs, dealer boyfriends.

She's the only survivor of a terrible unexplained massacre. But then, as she wakes up in her hospital bed, she's offered a second chance : to join the Lethe house.

This entity, from Yale University, called the Ninth House is in charge of keeping an eye on the eight other secret societies of the university. In these societies, influential people are instructed, they are performing magic, often in a very sinister and dangerous way.

So Alex, is offered a place in this dark world, because she has the rare and mysterious power to see ghosts. As she struggles to find her place in this new occult world, her mentor, Darlington "the gentleman of Lethe", disappears and she finds herself investigating the murder of a girl along with his vanishing. Just as Alex is about to find out, the occult activities of the companies turn out to be more sinister and extraordinary than any paranoid imagination could conceive.

To tell the truth, the first hundred pages were confusing, the concepts, the characters, the Yale buildings, it was a lot to take in. But once I figured all that out, I couldn't resist the appeal of this dark, compelling, and murderous book. I really appreciated the fact that we switch from Alex's point of view to Darlington's, it brings two approaches to the story, one in the present with Alex and one in the past before Darlingon's disappearance.

This thrilling, brimming with ancient mysteries, magic, and the promise of danger, story was a hell of a ride. The characters were incredibly well-painted, and the magical world was well conceived.

A twisty, original and unexpected plot and, until the very end, it was tense and exciting, even if, at the final moments, the author dropped enough clues for the reader to guess who might be behind the murder at the center of this story.

To summarize my opinion on this book : I want more, then if you read it, the end is a promise of the continuation of these magical, mysterious adventures that you can't get enough of. I can only recommend this book, even if you have to keep in mind the trigger warnings. (mentioned at the top of the article)
